AR by the numbers: conversion, returns, order value
“Try it in your room” sounds like a marketing toy — until you price the returns it prevents. We collected the studies that measured 3D/AR impact in real commerce funnels and read them together: what you can carry into your own catalog, and what you can't.
Shopify: +94% conversion on pages with 3D/AR
What was measured
Shopify publicly reported that stores with 3D content on product pages show, on average, a 94% higher conversion rate. The figure appeared in the Shop app 3D/AR-preview announcement and is repeated in their AR-in-ecommerce overview.

How to read it honestly. This is a platform-wide observation, not an RCT: 3D content isn't adopted randomly — bigger brands with high-consideration categories (furniture, appliances) make it. Part of the lift is self-selection. But even with that discount, 94% is too large a gap to explain by selection alone: for furniture, where “will it fit / will it look right” is the decision bottleneck, 3D/AR hits exactly that bottleneck.
Wayfair: +92% conversion, −43% returns, +28% order value
What was measured
The “View in Room” AR case from Wayfair — the largest US furniture retailer. Industry reviews of the case report: roughly +92% conversion on products with try-on, ~43% fewer returns, ~28% higher average order value, and several-fold longer sessions.

The +28% basket isn't magic. A shopper who has “placed” the sofa gets confident about add-ons: the second module, the matching armchair. AR removes the “it won't match” fear, so basket width — not discounts — drives the lift.
Price the returns in money, not percents. A bulky return means reverse logistics, inspection, often write-off. With a ~20% furniture return rate and return handling at 8–15% of item price, −43% returns is worth 1–3% of revenue straight back into margin — on furniture turnover that alone rivals a full year of AR subscription cost.
DFS × Vertebrae (Snap): 22× return on investment
What was measured
DFS, the UK's largest furniture retailer, measured exactly what most vendors avoid: money. Its partnership with the Vertebrae 3D/AR platform (a Snap company) was reported as a 22× ROI on the AR investment.
The same ecosystem published the −40% returns figure across furniture and apparel verticals (Snap/Vertebrae, 2020–2021); it is cited in industry round-ups such as eyedex.co — 3D visualization statistics.
Magna × Snap: shoppers remember more and return less
What was measured
Magna Media Trials (research arm of Magna) ran a controlled experiment with Snap on AR advertising: AR units produced measurable lifts in ad recall, purchase intent and brand advocacy — and a reduced likelihood of returning the product. The often-quoted “−64% likelihood of returns” traces back to this Media Trials study.

Caveat. A lab experiment on ad creative is not your product page. It says something real, though: AR lowers the “I'm buying the wrong thing” anxiety at the moment of choice. Expect an effect — but measure its size on your own A/B groups rather than pasting someone else's number into a business plan.
What this means for a furniture maker
- Conversion lifts concentrate in “try-on” categories — furniture is entirely one of them: the decision hinges on size, color and fit.
- Returns are the most monetizable effect, even more than conversion: for bulky goods every return is logistics + inspection + possible write-off.
- Basket size grows via add-ons — a confident buyer takes the set, not the single item.
- Other people's percents are a compass, not a promise. We don't pledge +94%: we run a pilot on 5 of your products and report AR-vs-no-AR conversion on your own traffic — you get your own number.
